主讲人简介

Dr. Jean-Paul Pinelli is a structural engineer who is a professor of Civil Engineering at Florida Institute of Technology, where he founded the Wind and Hurricane Impact Research Laboratory.  He graduated from the University of Buenos Aires, and later obtained his Master and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA. Over the years, Dr. Pinelli has received funding, from the National Science Foundation, FEMA, Florida Sea Grant, Florida Department of Transportation, Florida Department of Community Affairs, Florida Department of Financial Services, and the National Research Council of Canada, among others.

Dr. Pinelli has retained his original research interest in seismic engineering although a substantial part of his research effort is now oriented towards wind engineering.  An important research project in which he leads the engineering team is the development of the Florida Public Hurricane Loss Model (FPHLM), which is a multidisciplinary, inter-institution project funded by the State of Florida.  The purpose is to develop a model to predict insurance hurricanes losses in the State of Florida.  His team recently started work on modeling the effect of storm surge.  The model is also a powerful tool for mitigation studies.

Other research projects involve developing and using wireless instrumentation for the purpose of hurricane wind monitoring.  The research has resulted in novel networks of wireless sensors, whose application goes beyond wind monitoring.

Dr. Pinelli is also interested in the control of vibration.  With colleagues at FIT he is investigating the effectiveness of innovative dampers for the damping of seismic and wind vibrations in tall buildings.
